The Good House by Ann Leary is a wonderful book. I listened to the audiobook and was glad I did. Actress Mary Beth Hurt was the narrator and did a fantastic job. Her voice was A Good House book and just perfect for 60 year old Hildy Good/5. Hildy Good narrates this story, and in some respects it's about her and in others it's about the McAllisters, to whom she sold the house of the title (though the title could, I suppose refer to one or two others).

This is NOT a book "about" alcoholism-- I wouldn't have been interested to pick it up/5(). A GOOD HOUSE is a very good character study of a Canadian family during the latter half of the twentieth century.

The Good House "The Good House" captures so many aspects of alcoholism in such a gentle way. Denial, blackouts, the life style, shame, embarrassment and the long lasting effects it has on everyone involved is all a part of this book.

Because it is written in first person the reader gets right into the alcoholics head. I loved this book. The ending of A Good House features talk, laughter, music, dancing, food, gorgeous clothes, and beautiful pictures, both still and moving. Though no one at the wedding dance tries to pretend that their shared lives have been idyllic, there is nevertheless a feeling of celebration and hope.
